Another stop on my journey to explore parks before the year's end, but this one was unlike any other. Nestled within Newtown Park, the Veterans Memorial Walk isn't a destination you stumble upon by accident--it's a place that asks you to slow down, to look closer, and to feel. The moment I entered the memorial plaza with the boys, I was struck by a sense of reverence. Words alone cannot capture the weight of it. Flags from every branch of service stand proudly, anchored by the U.S. flag and the City of Johns Creek flag, reminding visitors of both the national and local bonds of sacrifice. The pathway, smooth and accessible, guides you past stone monuments that trace the history of our nation's battles--from World War I through Afghanistan. Each memorial bears the name and years of the conflict, with the campaign service medal engraved over hauntingly beautiful images from that era. To walk past them is to walk through history, but also through stories of courage, loss, and unshakable duty. Beneath your feet are memorial pavers, each one carrying a name or message left in remembrance. Around you are benches and a large gazebo, inviting you to sit, breathe, and let the silence speak. It is in those pauses that the memorial does its deepest work--allowing gratitude to take root in reflection. What struck my family most were the newer memorials--Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Perhaps because they feel so recent, they remind us that service and sacrifice are not distant chapters but ongoing commitments. This walk is not just a collection of monuments. It is a living reminder that freedom is inherited at a cost. It is a place to remember, to honor, and to quietly say thank you.

I had the privilege of spending a Memorial Day weekend in Washington DC a number of years ago. This year, I found myself in the Johns Creek area, so I wanted to spend a moment to reflectively walk through the Johns Creek Veteran Memorial Walk. It is a lasting tribute dedicated to veterans with individual black granite memorials commemorating every major conflict dating from World War I until present day. One of the highlights of the walk is The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.
