Symphony Reimagined: Johns Creek Welcomes a Visionary Conductor

Big things are happening in the Johns Creek arts scene! The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra (JCSO) has officially named Henry Cheng as its new Music Director, marking an exciting new chapter for the orchestra and our city’s cultural landscape.

Chosen after a season-long search dubbed Three Maestros, One Podium, Cheng emerged as the clear favorite of JCSO musicians, audience members, and the Board of Directors. Each finalist for the position conducted two concerts during the 2024–2025 season, and concertgoers were invited to weigh in with feedback and votes. Cheng wowed audiences with performances like “Classical K-Pop” and “Heroes Among Us: A Musical Tribute,”  blending innovation with artistry in a way that resonated deeply with the community

Cheng brings an impressive international résumé to Johns Creek. He’s conducted top-tier ensembles around the world, from the La Scala Chamber Orchestra to ensembles featured at the Tonyeong International Music Festival, and has earned honors like the Antal Doráti International Conducting Competition and the European Union Conducting Competition. But perhaps most importantly, his vision for orchestral music is rooted in connection and community.

“This isn’t just about making music,” Cheng said. “It’s about building something meaningful and lasting, and serving a community that truly values innovation, education, and the arts.”

Cheng is known for his genre-defying programming and creative approach to audience engagement. His projects span from Minecraft-inspired music education initiatives to interdisciplinary performances that fuse sound, movement, and visual storytelling. Whether he’s exploring the musical crossroads between BTS and Beethoven or collaborating with human rights groups, Cheng’s work is driven by curiosity, creativity, and compassion.

And now, he brings that same spirit to Johns Creek.
