Diwali: The Festival of Lights 

During the months of October and November, a vibrant Hindu festival known as Diwali takes place over the course of five days. This cultural event is also known as the Festival of Lights and is celebrated by millions around the world. This year, the City of Johns Creek will be joining the festivities of Diwali by hosting a Diwali Market, featuring an afternoon of cultural celebration and family-friendly fun. 

Backstory on Diwali 

Diwali is an important religious Hindu festival that has its beginnings in India. It marks the start of the Hindu New Year with the exact date of the festival changing but typically falling within October and November. The main day of Diwali this year falls on October 20. The festival celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance, with each day of Diwali having its own significance and ritual. Families come together during this time to light lamps or diyas, decorate their homes, share sweets and gifts, watch fireworks and welcome new beginnings. It’s a time filled with hope, renewal and positivity! 

The Diwali Market 

The City of Johns Creek’s Diwali Market will take place on Saturday, October 11, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Held at the Johns Creek City Hall, this exciting and free event will feature a market of food and retail vendors along with live entertainment. You’ll get to taste traditional foods associated with this rich festival. This market is a community-organized Diwali event to embrace and celebrate the cultural diversity of our community. Even if you don’t celebrate Diwali, this event is a great opportunity to learn about a new culture and experience the beauty of Diwali! So, bring your family, friends and loved ones out to the Diwali Market to experience the vibrancy and significance of Diwali.
